Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
