New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
