In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
